Vadodara Marathon 2009

As the city gears up for the Vadodara Marathon 2009, the organizers are leaving no stones unturned to ensure a comfortable reception for the participants and especially foreigners.  The website has a ‘Travel information‘ page mostly plagiarised from the Wikitravel listing of Vadodara.

The Indian Express even featured a report.

[Vadodara] is a nice place to be but lacks a nightlife altogether because of a blanket ban on alcohol that coats Gujarat. Foreign nationals can procure alcohol after getting a permit, but this procedure is not without its headaches.

When will the state government understand the value of potential revenue that the state loses due to the prohibition policy?  What twisted morality dictates pulling a blanket ban on a legitimate industry that functions all around the world while creating jobs and providing a livelihood to millions of people?

We support the government’s policy for relaxation of alcohol rules in favour of increasing accessibility for non-residents and foreigners.  However, we have a long way to go before the rules are relaxed in favour of the general populace.

On a different note, I scoured the internet for the Bombay Prohibition Act as implemented in Gujarat but could not find the bare statute anywhere.  How can we expect dialogue if policy is shrouded in such secrecy?
